Oral Communications 1113 Course Description


Communication principles and practice in the preparation and delivery of public speeches. 3 semester hours credit.

 

Course Objectives

Following instruction and completion of activities the student will...(with a minimum grade of 75 percent accuracy)

  1. Develop an understanding of the speechmaking process.
  2.  Become aware of types of nonverbal communication and its importance.
  3. Identify personal strengths and weaknesses in communication and learn how to improve these skills.
  4. Recognize the importance of audience analysis in the preparation of a speech
  5. Utilize critical listening skills by observing others deliver speeches and providing them with constructive and effective feedback.
  6.  Familiarize oneself with some of the resources in the library that are helpful in speech preparations.
  7. Adapt to group dynamics by working in groups to accomplish a common goal.
  8. Utilize different ways of coping with communication apprehension.
  9. Sharpen critical thinking abilities through evaluation of the resources in the library that are helpful in speech preparations.
  10. Utilize the classroom as an open and constructive learning environment in which to practice and sharpen communication skills.
  11.  Adapt to a variety of types of speeches.
